Health Club News

My health club opened a new "Hand Washing Station" at our bathroom facilities to encourage proper sanitation. Cholera is spreading throughout Malawi and new fatalaties are announced daily. Cholera is a bacteria that causes horrific diahhrea and for many without medication, death. It is caused by injesting water or food contaminated with the bacteria. As a result, my health club decided that the first project we will take on this term is to create a "safe water station." The blue bucket was donated by an organization who works with safe water and the soap I brought from home. I brought all the free soaps I have gathered from hotels over the years. My soap should sustain us for a week more but the students are already talking about having a dance (disco) to raise money to buy more soap!! They are very motivated! Luckily during rainy season we are able to remove the lid and catch rainwater to use. Otherwise, we have a schedule for who fills the bucket each day. In the second picture you will see a group of students gathered in a semi circle. They were performing a song they wrote about "cholera" that they performed at the morning assembly for the entire school. The song was a big hit and included in the lyrics were messages about the importance of washing your hands, working as a team, and not stealing the soap!!!
